Dr Christopher Earley Philosophy of Art University of Liverpool

I am a philosopher working on aesthetics.

My current research focuses on why artists make things so hard for audiences, why everyone seems so happy about this, how we can learn from art, how aesthetic artifacts help us work out our place in history, and what philosophy can do for artists.

I am currently British Society of Aesthetics Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Liverpool and co-editor of the journal Debates in Aesthetics. As of September 2025, I will be a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Edinburgh. I completed my doctoral studies at the University of Warwick.

To see more about my current research projects, have a look at my publications (or you can hear me talk about my work here and here). For a non-technical introduction to some of my current work, have a look at this. For a list of recent talks, teaching engagements, and other activities, see my CV. For anything else, feel free to send me an email.

As well as working in philosophy, I am also a practicing artist and a visiting tutor at the Slade School of Fine Art. You can find out about my other life here.
